Underground Art Wasghington D.C.

In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson called for architecturally significant stations in Washington’s new Metro system. Officials of the National Capital Transportation Agency hired Chicago architect Harry Weese, who proposed column-free stations. The result is a look that’s simple, elegant — and at times, awe-inspiring.
